Completed Project: Plant for Weed Swap, May 2020
This project is now closed. The information below is retained for historical purposes only.
We are very excited to announce our success at getting funding for a Community Participation Grant from the Coast Protection Board. Even the native plants are celebrating, native cranberry (Astroloma humifusum) at its starry best in Autumn!
We received $8046 from the board and generous cash donations from the Normanville Natural Resource Centre ($1000) and Cape Jervis Progress Association ($800), with additional support from District Council of Yankalilla, and Natural Resources – Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges. This meaning that we will be able to successfully complete all of our outcomes.
1. organise a social media campaign aimed at Cape Jervis residents inviting them to participate in a “local plants for weed swap”, providing targeted weed information and local plants to interested community members.

2. develop an educational / nature play activity suitable for self isolating students and home schooling parents, and provide resources to Yankalilla Area School to promote interest in coastal biodiversity and Indigenous food plants.
3. promote rare coastal plants and their habitat value through new signage, a carved gum nut art installation, and habitat for wildlife with the addition of habitat logs.
4. employ contractors to control “red alert” weeds, predominantly woody weeds (Acacia cyclops and olive) and Gazania to continue volunteer efforts to “build resilience for vegetation remnants by improving connectivity between remnants”.
A home-isolation gift for Cape Jervis residents
Covid-19 has had a huge effect on our lives. The volunteers of Cape Jervis Coastal Community Group (CJCCG) would like to offer you one thing we know about: local plants.
While at home self-isolating, or social distancing, how about swapping some weeds in your garden for some local plants instead? You get rid of weeds, and we give you plants to replace them!
All you need do is send us a picture of your weedy patch and we will deliver to your door, a pack of seedlings, plant tags, fertiliser, soil wetter, tree guards and stakes, and a copy of Coastal Garden: A planting guide … an entire kit for planting out your new patch! The plants? Well, what would you like? We have four different packs of 12-15 plants on offer, for early to mid June.
To take advantage of this offer, send a photo or sketch of your selected spot, and indicate your first and second preferences for the pack you would like to receive, together with your name, address and phone or email contact, by Thurs 4th June 2020

Not sure if you have any weeds?
Check out these common weeds, that are often garden escapees from coastal gardens.
Then there are the woody weeds – harder to control, so best to recognise them as seedlings when they can be pulled out by hand.
Not sure what wattles you have – good or bad – see if this helps
